Rotary District 7690 Holds District Conference

Rotary International District 7690 celebrated their first District Conference of the new millennium in Historic Williamsburg, VA.  Over 300 Rotarians attended the conference held at the Radisson Fort Magruder Inn May 4 - 7, 2000.

The District Conference, hosted by District Governor John Haynes of the Mount Airy Rotary Club, celebrated the exceptional work and accomplishments of the forty-six clubs and 3,400 Rotarians throughout the District.  The emphasis of celebration focused on the theme of Rotary 2000 - Act with Consistency, Credibility, and Continuity.

The highlight of the weekend was the District Governor's Banquet on Saturday evening.  The evening began with a reception hosted by District Governor Haynes in honor of District Governor-Elect Jack Green and included a Fife & Drum Procession into Richmond Hall.  The keynote speaker was U.S. Representative Richard Burr who spoke of the ideals of Rotary practiced today and how the colonial leaders of Williamsburg practiced those ideals leading to the founding of our country.  Nido Qubein, Chairman of an International Consulting Firm, served as the keynote speaker at Friday's event.

Haynes presented the Governor's Gold Club Awards to the Greensboro, Crescent, Summit, Clemmons, Gate City, Furnitureland, Kernersville, Greensboro Airport, Triad, and Oak Hollow clubs. Awards were also presented to Southern Pines, Membership and Retention Award; Alamance Breakfast, Attendance Award; and Greensboro, Drug Abuse Prevention Award.  Individuals were also honored as Ann Ashmon (Elkin-Jonesville) received the World Community Service Award and Terry Ball (Summit) was recognized with the World Peace and Understanding Award.

The conference guests included Ted Williams, the representative of Rotary International President Carlo Ravizza; Dean Angel, Rotary District 7600 Governor of the Williamsburg area; Giovanni Paolo Marello, Mosco Rotary President; and the Rotary Group Study Exchange Team from District 1140 in Surry, England.  The District 7690 GSE Team, which visited District 1140, of Rotarian Bob Fowler, Greg Shusky and Melanie Coble were also guests.

"The conference was a tremendous success anc celebraton of the goals we achieved over the past twelve months," John Haynes said.  He wishes to thank the District Conference Committee, chaired by Teresa Yeatts, for this successful conference and all Rotarians for their support of him and his wife, Barbara, during his term.

To:   John Haynes & Teresa Yeatts, and the Conference Committee

Thank you for taking the time, energy, and sharing your talents and interests in making this District Conference 2000 one that we will remember for a long time.  You heralded in the new millennium well, and we all return to our Rotary clubs energized and ready to serve our local and world communities.
