Dylan
Westrick (Lee County High School, sponsored by Jonesboro Rotary Club) received
first place in the Multi-District Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest,
held on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Chapel Hill Town Hall. Also representing Rotary
District 7690 at the Multi-District event were Deen Garba (Northern Guilford High
School, sponsored by the Greensboro Airport Rotary Club) and Marquis Hackett (Southern
Lee High School, sponsored by the Sanford Rotary Club).
Each student
presented an inspiring speech directed to their peers. The topic was "What
Must Be Done To Prevent Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the US". In the District
7690 contest held at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown on February
20, Dylan, Dean Garba and Marquis won first, second and third place, respectively.

District
7690 Rotary Against Drugs Speech Contest was held on Saturday, February 21,
2009 at Guilford Technical Community College. Sixteen high school students representing
various schools throughout our district footprint participated. Each student presented
an inspiring speech directed to their peers. The topic was "What Must Be
Done To Prevent Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the US". Winners will advance to
Multi-District Competition to be held in Chapel Hill on Sunday, March 22, 2009.
In the event one of the top 3 cannot attend, an alternate will attend in their
place. Multi-District participants will be Ellen Amos, Dylan Westrick and Susan
Thomas. Hillary Akers will not be participating as a representative. Additionally,
the first place winner will present her speech at District Conference in April.
A special thank you to all of the clubs that sent a participant to the competition.
Each club was well-represented with a motivated, passionate student that worked
very hard to prepare for this contest. The winners are as follows:
1st Place - Hillary Akers - Lee Early College - sponsored by San-Lee Sunrise Club
2nd Place - Ellen Amos - Wesleyan Christian Academy - sponsored by High Point
