Bringing Safe Water to Third World Countries:
Every 15 seconds, a child dies of a water borne disease. Water Missions International
is eliminating this problem one village at a time by providing chlorinated drinking
water in many 3rd world countries. Some of these countries are participating in
Rotary's Future Vision and are seeking US partners. My wife and I spent 3 months
in Malawi, Africa last spring and have a program showing the work of Water Missions
to share. Contact: Burton Northam, bnortham@yadtel.net | Van

"Arts
for Life" is a non-profit organization that serves seriously ill children
in four hospitals in North Carolina. By providing educational art programs such
as visual art, creative writing and music, we enrich the lives of patients and
their families and encourage positive healthcare experiences. Our art lessons
decrease patient stress and anxiety, teach life skills, and keep patients active
and engaged. A typical presentation lasts up to thirty minutes and includes a
five minute dvd which showcases examples of art created with patients. For details

Super
Trend Convergence: How the convergence of 3 major trends
will change our careers, our investments, and our lives. The 3 Super Trend areas
are, 1) Globalization (China/India and the emerging markets are the megatrend
under the super trend), 2) Technology Accelerators (being used extensively by
Fortune 500 companies and in health care and energy - science fiction is becoming
science fact) and 3) the Global Age Wave (Baby boomers, the echo boom and overseas
age demographics). Any one of these super trends will significantly change the
world in the next 5-10 years, and the convergence of the 3 will create massive
change, and both threats and opportunities. What the "new normal" looks
like coming out of this recession will be massively influenced by these super
trends. Dennis Stearns, winner of the 2008 Business Leader Triad Entrepreneur
of the Year award, has been called "one of the financial planning industry's
leading futurists" by the Financial Planning Association. Stearns

Humorous Guide to Caregiving - Jim Calhoun has personally experienced the
challenges caregivers face and he has collected these challenges and insights
for how to overcome them in his book Lessons from the Ancients, a Humorously
Helpful Guide for Caregiving. He would never have guessed during his college
days that his interest in psychology and English would prepare him for the caregiving
role and for writing a book. The book was written with the hope of providing other
caregivers resources for assistance as well as inspiration. Jim lives in Atlanta,
but is frequently in the Triad area. PDG
David McCoy will be happy to try work with club program chairs in arranging
for Jim to speak. You should plan ahead for this one. | David

Serving
Greensboro's underserved population - If you liked the movie Freedom Writers,
you will love this program. The Glenwood area of Greensboro had one of the highest
crime rates in town. Marshall Benbow and his wife moved their family into the
community and started an after school tutoring program by walking door to door
and handing out flyers to the neighborhood kids. Within a year, they have engaged
over 100 kids, with one adult volunteer mentor per child. School performance has
improved and now a summer camp is being offered that gives kids a chance to experience
things they could not get in Glenwood -- mountains, beach, museums, etc...
